The great news is that in today’s digital world, it’s easier than ever to get things done with your computer, tablet, or phone. NOAA permit applications are no exception. It’s easier than ever to submit your application by filling it out online. You can even pay any relevant fees at the same time. If you’ve never done so, use this handy guide to walk you through the process, from start to finish.
Identify Your Region
When applying for a NOAA permit, it’s important to do so in the correct region. This ensures that you are licensed for the area in which you plan to fish. You can apply for more than one region if you cross borders. There are six regions and figuring out which one you are part of is your first step. Choose from the following regions:
- Alaska Region
- New England/ Mid-Atlantic region
- Southeast Region
- West Coast region
- Pacific Island region
- Atlantic highly migratory species
Having the wrong permit can lead to fines and other legal trouble so it makes sense to check and double-check that you’re applying in the correct region.
Fill Out the Forms
Once you’ve identified your region, simply click it on our website under the “Complete our forms button.” You’ll choose your region, then narrow it down within that region. For example, in the southern region, you have the option to choose the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, or the South Atlantic. There may also be special permits if you plan to fish for specific species. Follow the directions for filling out the form, then check it carefully to make sure you haven’t made any errors, which can increase the fees and the time it takes to get your permit.
Submit the Documentation and Pay the Fees
Your next step is to submit the documentation and pay the corresponding fees. Again, it’s a good idea to check all of the paperwork before you click submit. Your documents will be checked before being approved, but you can save time and money by catching errors yourself. You can check the status of your application online. Once the paperwork has been checked by our staff after submission, your status will appear as pending. This is when you will also make payment for your permit. This varies based on the permits you’re applying for and what you plan to fish for. The system will give you a breakdown of the cost and you can input your payment information directly into the system.
Await Approval
Your final step is to wait for approval. Your work is likely done at this point unless there are mistakes or missing documentation. If this is the case, we’ll notify you so that you can remedy the situation. Once we approve your application, you will receive a notification, as well as your permit. Keep this permit handy when you’re out on the water just in case you need to prove that you are licensed.
Submitting your NOAA permit applications is fast and easy when you use our online system. You’ll find everything you need at the Commercial Fishing Permits Center.
